The NMU project is building on the broad range of knowledge and expertise in the North Sea area which is being harnessed within a common and lasting transnational network of universities, The "Northern Maritime University" will directly address the needs of the maritime industry: To better prepare maritime business managers to cope with growing maritime traffic, port development, and rising environmental challenges, by developing multidisciplinary and internationally oriented qualifications at Bachelors and Masters level.
NMU is thereby working towards establishing a Area of Research and Innovation for the maritime industry in the North Sea Region, contributing towards the Lisbon strategy to create a more effective maritime business sector and an enhanced competitiveness of the maritime sector.
University of Southern Denmark - Department of Maritime Research and Innovation
Background and Aim
Aim
Strengthen the maritime business sector and to increase its capacity for innovation within the North Sea Region (as well as in the Baltic Sea Region);
Contribute significantly to enhance the innovation capacities of the beneficiaries from SME and maritime industry with the development of the NMU qualification offerings. This will ultimately lead ultimately to more effective, and a greater absolute level of, investment in product and process innovation by the trained maritime business actors in the North Sea Region;
Exploit the likely future growth potential in the fields of short sea shipping (SSS), port operations and global maritime transport and related industries (e.g. logistics services);
Strengthen the competitiveness of the industry and services sector and to step up efforts in the areas of industrial policy and the service market;
Contribute to sustainable development of the growing maritime transport business sector especially in terms of environmental protection;
Establish a European Area of Research and innovation for the maritime business sector and reaching beyond the project period;
Strengthen the competitiveness of the European education industry in the maritime business sector in comparison to global competitors and removing obstacles for labour, academic and student mobility.
Background Maritime industries are promoters of growth and help to improve quality of life within coastal regions. It is important to recognise the wider economic importance of maritime industries and services for the European economy and citizens as a whole (Maritime Policy Green Paper 2006).
With markets becoming increasingly global, tariff barriers disappearing and more information based economies, the maritime industry and its related sectors need to emphasize innovation, competency and collaboration. The potential to learn, collaborate and innovate faster than one's competitors becomes the sustainable source of competitive advantage in the emergent knowledge-based society.
However, the maritime sector in the North Sea and Baltic Sea Regions is facing a lack of well trained maritime business managers. Adequate qualification offerings must reflect the underlying demand for education and qualifications which enhance the innovation capacity of the maritime industries, one of the most globalised of industries.
Expertise in specific aspects of the maritime sector already exists at several centres of excellence housed within universities in the North Sea Region. This broad range of knowledge and expertise needs to be harnessed, connected and gathered within a common and lasting network of universities.
The "Northern Maritime University" (NMU) will meet these challenges by building up a strong transnational network of universities in the North Sea Region (NSR) which intensive and continuously integrates relevant stakeholders from the maritime business sector.
Expected Outcomes
Common curricula for North Sea Region oriented maritime business management programmes with qualifications at Bachelors, Masters and CPD levels,
Qualification offerings in maritime business management including e-learning modules,
Stakeholder study, a NMU "Toolbox" identifying the maritime sector's educational needs in the NSR,
NMU portfolio and a roadmap for programme and content development,
Professional accreditation of programmes and qualifications,

April - September 2010
Project Representatives represented the NMU network and gave a presentation on the project activities at the 2010 Annual Educators’ Conference on Logistics Education in Changsha, China, from 26/07/2010 to 04/08/2010 with over 300 hundred delegates from China. The NMU network is now looking into in depth cooperation with the Business School of Beijing Technology and Business University of China (BTBU).
The project formulated a response “Enhancing the innovation capacity of the European transport industry” as input to the European Commissions communication on “A sustainable future for transport: Towards an integrated, technology-led and user friendly system". In addition, the project is working towards establishing a European Area of Research and Innovation for the maritime industry.
The projects stakeholder group continues to grow. Two new stakeholders have now been integrated: Beluga Shipping Company and Zeller Associates, Germany. The stakeholder group now contains 23 members.
October 2009 - March 2010
The project is in full swing with its activities. As part of the pier review system three deliverables have now been reviewed by the project; NMU service and product portfolio, NMU course catalogue and the NMU business strategy (renamed from the marketing strategy).A module catalogue has also been finalised and E-learning material for Northern Maritime University modules (B,C,F and G) 2nd pilot have now been finished. In addition to this, the e-learning material for modules A and D are ready.
In October 09 there was a stakeholder meeting in Scotland, were new stakeholders were integrated.
Progress is also being made with the projects two pilot courses with students. The first from Oct 09 until Jan 2010. Here module F was taught on Intermodal transport. Module D on Logistics and Global Supply Chain is still running. For the second pilot course from Feb 2010 until May 2010 the following modules elements have been taught; module A on Applied Maritime Transport Management, module B on Maritime Economics, module C on Maritime Transport, module E on International Maritime Human Resource Management and module G on Ship Knowledge. An evaluation concept for the 1st pilot modules is ongoing - with the first results available.
The project has identified a Maritime Industry Panel Group which will give expert advice to the project and is seen as part of the project follow-up. The projects' 1st foresight exercise took place in October 09, with a second taking place in March 2010. Further foresight exercises are anticipated.
The project produced its 3rd newsletter in October 09. There is continuous dialogue with project stakeholders through various means i.e. dissemination events and conferences.
April - September 2009
The "Northern Maritime University" (NMU) project has completed the concept for the pilot run that is planned to start in October 2009. Participants in the pilot will be students and employees from the maritime industry. First NMU courses and modules are being developed and produced as e-learning content.
Forthcoming activities can build upon a transnational network of universities in the North Sea Region (NSR) that has been established within the first 18 project months. An ongoing dialogue within the framework of various international conferences is supported by a strong stakeholder group.
The NMU partners started to pool their course content, to develop common curricula and a concept for the NMU service product portfolio which is fit for purpose to meet the needs of maritime industries today and in the future.
The results of an online SME and stakeholder study and survey are available now and reveal the education needs of the maritime industry. With GAUSS mbH - Environmental Protection and Safety in Shipping, a further stakeholder from maritime industry joined the NMU stakeholder group which consists now of 18 industry partners.
Until March 2009
NMU started building up a transnational network of universities in the North Sea Region. In the project's initial 15 months a transnational Stakeholder Group was established and dialogue continued various international conferences.
The NMU partners started to pool their course content, to develop common curricula and a concept for the NMU service product portfolio which is fit for purpose to meet the needs of maritime industries today and in the future. An online SME and stakeholder study and survey was carried out which reveals the demand of maritime industry.
First NMU courses and modules are being developed and produced as e-learning content. These courses will be part of the first pilot run with students and employees from industry. The NMU e-appearance for marketing of NMU products and services is currently being developed.
The NMU partners carried out an e-learning workshop which is part of the NMU self-enhancement strategy.
New stakeholders from the maritime industry in Germany, Denmark, Poland, and Malaysia joined the NMU stakeholder group.
