The NMU pilot on “Maritime Transport & the Environment” (MT&E) started on Wednesday, March 3rd with a one day face-to-face session at the campus of Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Germany. More than 30 apprentices of shipping agent and NMU stakeholder “Sartori & Berger” and others enrolled for this first test of the newly developed module that focuses on the environmental impacts of shipping.

The Workgroup Maritime Logistics of Jacobs University Bremen has been developed an e-learning module element called “Ship Knowledge”. The e-learning course will run for five weeks starting from 8th March 2010. NMU Stakeholders and students from NMU partner universities are invited to participate in this course. As a general rule state aid is not given under the North Sea Region Programme. This implies that the activities of a project do not distort competition i.e. give the beneficiaries an unfair competitive advantage. This is the case whether or not the beneficiaries are operating on an open market.

IIIB Project shortlisted for RegioStar award

The 500 participants took part in a programme, which featured representatives from the Norwegian Government, the European Commission as well as the private sector and educational institutions. During the event the new programme was formally launched by a representative of the Danish Managing Authority.

At the NMC II conference in Aberdeen 16-18 May a pioneer Letter of Intention was signed between two regions in Norway and Russia. The North Sea Programme project Northern Maritime Corridor (NMCII) served as an important catalyst in the work leading up to the signing.

At the ministerial meeting of the North Sea Conference in Gothenburg, on 3-5 May, Ministers from eight North Sea countries and officials from the European Commission met for two days to discuss measures to reduce the impact of fishery and shipping in the North Sea.

Save the North Sea: Viable results that have promise of continuing

After 3 years the Save the North Sea project drew to a close on December 31, 2004. The final results of 450 tonnes of plastic picked up through the Fishing for Litter initiative, 2000 organisations involved in the work, a recycling machine for fishing nets and gear, ECO school teachers and students educated, a fulmar seabird study in 7 countries, three market studies on attitudes to marine litter completed, 400 seamen trained in marine awareness - these are some of the tangible results.
